Tiger and Simba Leones are genetically engineered Lion People. A brilliant (and rich) designer of quantum logic chips, Tiger finds more than she bargained for while solving a layout problem on the W32 chip: the Coherent Quantum Momentum Transfer effect. It can be, and is, used to build a sublight stardrive. Tiger, Simba and their human friends Willie and Wilma Ragland travel to epsilon Eridani, which they find is already occupied by the squidlike Heptapi. Ecological disaster and nuclear war leave them the only things alive in the system. They replant, founding a colony to care for their new world.
